September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, a time when communities come together to raise awareness about a topic that affects countless lives around the world. While the subject of suicide is undeniably sensitive, it’s crucial to openly discuss and acknowledge its prevalence. The goal of this month is not only to spread awareness but also to provide support, resources, and education to help prevent suicide.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year, making it a global public health issue. In the United States alone, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, claiming more lives than homicide. These numbers highlight the urgency of addressing this issue and working towards its prevention.
Tragically, suicide doesn’t discriminate by age; even children and adolescents are affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-34 in 2020. Factors such as bullying, academic pressure, and struggles with mental health can contribute to the vulnerability of young people. Recognizing warning signs and providing resources for young individuals is essential to addressing this crisis. Warning signs may be as general as the age, race, socio-economic status, ethnicity, or occupation of an individual. To learn more click here.
Factors of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as social isolation, remote learning, and disruptions to routines, have had a significant negative impact on the mental health of young people. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) explored the direct correlation in the increased rate of youth suicide during the pandemic. The research further emphasizes that this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes expanding access to mental health services for youth, providing resources for parents and caregivers, and promoting open discussions about mental health.
The impact of suicide extends beyond the individual and reaches their families and loved ones. Grief, guilt, and confusion are just a few of the complex emotions that survivors of suicide loss experience.
National Suicide Prevention Month serves as a reminder that discussions surrounding mental health and suicide are essential for fostering understanding, support, and prevention. By acknowledging the impact of suicide on individuals, children, and families, we take a step closer to creating a world where those struggling feel less isolated and more empowered to seek help. Let’s stand together, spread awareness, and work towards a future where every life is valued and protected.
